Pride and Prejudice

Tuesday, February 7, 2012

Despite today being the bicenttenial of Charles Dickens, I am not reading a book by Charles Dickens. I haven't picked up a book in a really long time, other than for this blog or for school, and the latest book I chose was Pride and Prejudice.

If you follow my twitter, you'll see that I tweeted the famous line from the novel, "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife." It's the opening line to Jane Austen's novel, and when I first came upon it when I read the novel in middle school, I was like "Huh?".

Truth be told, I hated the novel when I first picked it up. I couldn't get through the first chapter, and the character of Mrs. Bennett annoyed me. She was vain and obnoxious. However, despite my initial thoughts (Ha, my initial prejudice har. har. har ) I still marched on. After all, Pride and Prejudice is so well known that there has to be something good about it right?

Alas, my decision then was a great decision. Pride and Prejudice remains to be one of my favorite books, and I have went on to read Jane Austen's other works.

Anyways, back to the original topic of Charles Dickens's bicentennial... What are you doing?
