 - Arrietty in The Secret World of Arrietty

Walking into the movie theater to see The Secret World of Arrietty, I saw a theater full of chidlren under the age of 8 and their parents. If I could be counted as a "child", I'd be the oldest "child" there. Because I walked into the theater a little late, I had the unfortunate luck to sit in one of those seats that are just a bit too close to the screen.

I wanted to see The Secret World of Arrietty because it was a Japanese film and because it was a Miyazaki film. These two reasons are redundant because they're practically the same reason. I walked into the theater a bit late for these reasons. I had mistakenly thought that no one in the U.S knew about Miyazaki/ Studio Ghibli films unless they were like me- a geek who likes Japanese culture. I suppose I underestimated the power of Disney and their advertising.

The Secret World of Arrietty is a slow film about a 14 year old girl named Arrietty, who is a Borrower and a sickly boy named Shawn (Sho in the original Japanese version). Shawn has come to his aunt's house to live and be taken care of because of his upcoming heart surgery. Arrietty has been taught from childhood that Borrowers, tiny people who borrow things, cannot be seen by human beings. However, Arrietty has already been seen by Shawn on his first day at his aunt's house. This starts the beginning of a sweet friendship between Shawn and Arrietty.

In the movie, there are many picturesque scenes that are evocative of old Disney movies when the scenes looked like paintings. The animation draws watchers in, and allows them to believe in whatever story Miyazaki invents.

Based on the book, The Borrowers by Mary Norton, The Secret World of Arrietty is a sweet movie about the strength of friendship and the things that can be learned from one friend to another.
